Many clients have asked my advice on what to wear for family sessions. My first suggestion is to decide on a theme. What is your vision? Do you prefer more formal traditional photos? Or are you aiming to capture a casual, more playful side? Once you have that answer, it gives a bit of direction on where to go for clothing choices. You can always bring a change of clothes as well to give your session a different look.
As for coloring, I believe that colorful is better. More saturated tones, such as blues, reds, purples and yellows, tend to pop more in photos. White typically does not photograph well, so I could suggest avoiding too much of it. In larger groups, try to coordinate rather than match each color. It’s best to pick a few colors and mix them all in. An easy way to achieve a different look within one session is to utilize layers. It’s easy to remove a jacket or sweater to give the next batch of photos a whole different feel!
